MY BRAIN: MY BEHAVIOR

Updated: Jan 29, 2024

Sister Rebecca L. Craven, General Young Women's Presidency: "Our oldest son’s third-grade teacher taught her class to 'boss your brain.' It was a reminder to her young students that they were in control of their thoughts and could therefore control what they do. I remind myself to 'boss my brain' when I find myself drifting toward things that matter less." April 2022 General Conference

Thoughts (MIND)

Ideas, concepts, and images in a person’s mind. The power to think is a gift from God, and we are free to choose how we use our power to think. The way we think greatly affects attitudes and behavior, as well as our standing after this life. Righteous thoughts lead to salvation; wicked thoughts lead to damnation.

Feelings (Heart)

A symbol of the mind and will of man and the figurative source of all emotions and feelings.

Behavior

Elder Russell M. Nelson: "We can change our behavior. Our very desires can change. How? There is only one way. True change—permanent change—can come only through the healing, cleansing, and enabling power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. He loves you—each of you! He allows you to access His power as you keep His commandments, eagerly, earnestly, and exactly. It is that simple and certain. The gospel of Jesus Christ is a gospel of change!

A strong human spirit with control over appetites of the flesh is master over emotions and passions and not a slave to them. That kind of freedom is as vital to the spirit as oxygen is to the body! Freedom from self-slavery is true liberation!" October 2013 General Conference

Brain Chemistry

Neural pathways are the connections between neurons that light up when you think of something for the first time, and the connections form a pattern in your brain. Your brain has now attached meaning to that specific pattern.

THERAPEUTIC MODALITY

The CBT triangle, or cognitive triangle, is a tool used to teach the concept of changing negative patterns of thought. The points of the triangle show how thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are all connected. By changing one of these three points, you can change the others for the better.

PRACTICE
  1. Lindsey thinks Sally is mad at her. Lindsey was walking through the Institute building and she saw Sally coming toward her. Sally usually gives Lindsey a hug and asks how Lindsey is doing. They usually chat for a minute or two and then go on their way. Today, Sally was looking at her phone. Lindsey called out and said hello to Sally. Sally looked up from her phone, waved hello and smiled and then went back to her phone. Sally's reaction has bothered Lindsey all day. In fact, Lindsey has been kind of mean to all her other friends today. Lindsey feels like she may have done something wrong.

  2. Charles just got off his mission two months ago. He is missing being a missionary so badly. On the mission, he had purpose and a goal. Charles has felt empty since coming home. He feels bored a lot. School has been rough as he is taking a lot of classes that have nothing to do with what he's interested in. His part-time job as a server is not fulfilling although he gets a paycheck every other week. He is trying to date, but just isn't vibing with anyone. Charles keeps wondering how he's become such a loser when he felt so needed as a missionary just a few months ago.
