The Joy of Becoming Clean (Chapter 1)

Updated: Aug 9

"...the sensational satisfaction of being washed and clean." p. 10

The Story of the Steer

"Jesus taught forcefully of the joy of this redeeming power." p. 10

The Only Way

"While for some the process of repentance can happen dramatically, as it did for Alma, this is more the exception than the rule. Most of us move step by step, inch by inch toward more goodness, more exactness in our covenants, more service and commitment. President Ezra Taft Benson said: 'For every Paul, for every Enos, and for every King Lamoni, there are hundreds and thousands of people who find the process of repentance must more subtle, much more imperceptible. Day by day they move closer to the Lord." p. 11

What are your inperceptible steps toward repentance?

"We must be fully converted to daily repentance ... Daily, as we are humble, the Lord will reveal our weaknesses to us ... Honesty in our prayers to god allows us to more clearly hear His voice." p. 12

President Harold B. Lee: "The most important of all the commandments of God is that one that you're having the most difficulty keeping ... today is the day for you to work ... until you've been able to conquer that weakness. then you start on the next one that's most difficult for you to keep." p. 13

The Challenge of Our Mortal Probation

"As we continue inch by inch to repent, we determine that nothing will hold us back; we will do our part. We will come to feel like that great Lamanite king who cried, 'Oh God ... wilt thou make thyself known unto me, and I will give away all my sins to know thee.' With this commitment to who we can become, the spiritual doors swing open. There is a new freedom to feel and to know, a freedom to become." p. 14

Case Study

Lance looks at pornography 2-3 times per week. Usually, it only happens at nighttime before he shuts off his phone to go to bed. It usually happens on days when he's feeling super stressed or super bored. He feels like his mind wanders a lot. Between 15 credits, a lab, his parttime job, his calling as a Sunday School teacher and then spending time with friends and dating, Lance finds it difficult to focus some days. He tries to make it to the temple at least once per month. He has talked to his bishop about the pornography and his bishop suggested going to the temple to find spiritual strength. When he does look at porn, it usually is only for 10-15 minutes each time. He feels the Holy Ghost prompting him to spend his time doing something more productive. Lance is frustrated with himself, feeling like he's two different people in one body.
